How Do Exosomes Work?
Exosomes are not actually cells. Rather, they are cellular byproducts that start as endosomal vesicles. These vesicles collect an “information payload” consisting of RNA, cytokines, growth factors, and other translational proteins. Endosomal vesicles gradually get released from cells, turning them into extracellular vesicles. While not all extracellular vesicles are exosomes, those are the ones with the highest “information payload”!
Of note, exosomes are VERY small. They are between 40 and 100 nanometers, which are three times smaller than stem cells. This means they can often pass through the blood brain barrier, and also are able to successfully be administered through very small gauge needles without sustaining damage.
