How does microneedling work with the ReBella Pen?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. It is a cosmetic procedure that involves repetitive puncturing of the skin with 33 gauge sterile, stainless steel needles. Depending on the cartridge used, there may be 12, 16 or more needles that are penetrating the skin at any particular point in time.

It is a minimally invasive therapy where the penetrating needles create small holes known as micro-channels with minimal damage to the epidermis. These micro-channels stimulate platelets and neutrophils to release TGF-alpha, TGF-beta and PDG which are fantastic for collagen and elastin production.

The series of microchannels allows for leakage of blood, serum and lymph in a controlled and temporary manner. These micro “injuries” are enough to initiate the “wound healing cascade” which is composed of three basic phases.

Temporary (3 to 5 minutes) micro-channles allow for superior penetration and diffusion of topicals during and post-procedure, allowing for optimal delivery.

The procedure leads to reorganization of collagen fibers and laying down of new collagen, elastin and capillaries. This has a skin tightening effect.

This in turn leads to an overall reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduction in pore size, increased suppleness and elasticity.

These benefits allow for the treatments of many skin conditions which may require either collagen remodeling (i.e., photo-aging, acne scarring, stretch-marks), optimization of topical drug delivery (i.e., acne, melanoma) or both.

Stretch marks, wound or burn scars, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation typically all respond well to microneedling. The therapy is typically performed with a serum such as Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and/or PRP.

Are there potential side effects with microneedling?

All in all, microneedling is a very safe procedure. One may see post procedural erythema which typically subsides within a few hours. The procedure may aggravate acne or reactivate a cold sore.

It is possible to see post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or an allergic contact dermatitis. If a provider does not use a sterile instrument/cartridge or an improper topical an infection or granuloma may occur.

Are there contraindications?

Those with active acne should wait until it subsides. Those with extreme keloidal tendency should refrain along with those on chemotherapy/radiotherapy.

If a person has moderate to severe chronic skin disease such as psoriasis or eczema then microneedling may not be a good idea. If a person has a local infection then the procedure should be delayed until it’s healed.

How often should treatments be performed?
